City centers with a future
The Thuringian Action Alliance
Lively, colorful and diverse – that is how our Thuringian city centers should be. A place where trade, gastronomy and commerce flourish, a place where public and cultural life pulsates, a place where residents and guests like to meet and communicate with each other. That is the guiding principle for our city centers.
The structural change in retail, the demographic changes in our society, the noticeable climate change and the consequences of the Corona pandemic are currently presenting our city centers with major challenges. The long-term strengthening, securing functional diversity and strategic future orientation of Thuringia's city centers, involving all stakeholders relevant to the city center, is today more than ever a central task of sustainable urban development policy.
The broad Thuringian action alliance „Innenstädte mit Zukunft“ is exactly committed to this. How? – We show it here.
A key foundation for strengthening Thuringia's city centers is the intensive and targeted cooperation between state politics, municipalities and their residents, as well as all stakeholders relevant to city centers. The Thuringian Action Alliance serves as the communication, exchange, and working platform for this. The Office of the Action Alliance, based at LEG Thüringen, pools existing resources and competencies together with the alliance partners and structures the development process with the aim of preparing effective measures to strengthen our city centers and putting them into practical implementation.

On June 8, 2021, the Thuringian Action Alliance – “City Centers with a Future” was founded and a joint Alliance Agreement signed. The following actors have since been working in partnership in the nationwide alliance for a long-term positive development of the city centers:
In the working groups Housing and Living, Climate and Vacancy, ideas for useful projects are developed within the framework of the alliance work and accompanied until implementation. The work paves the way for implementation in other locations in Thuringia and sometimes perhaps beyond.
Within the framework of the Thuringian Action Alliance, three working groups are active. The central tasks of the working groups are interdisciplinary communication, topic-related professional and content exchange, and the conception of measures and projects to strengthen Thuringia's city centers.

The sustainable strengthening of the functionality of Thuringia's city centers is a central goal of the working group's efforts within the action alliance. The working group is working on the development of pilot projects and measures with a model character that are intended to be applicable in Thuringia's large, medium, and small towns.

The main goals of the working group are to ensure comprehensive knowledge transfer and to develop pilot projects for climate adaptation and climate protection measures. Accordingly, the quality of life and stay in the city is a particular focus.

The working group pursues the goal of developing solution approaches for various vacancy typologies in constructive discourse. No fear of change – but commitment to innovation.

News and insights as well as statements from stakeholders, citizens, and initiators are bundled in this area.
