Thuringia's economy is characterized today by a broadly diversified industrial sector. The spectrum ranges from the food industry and the automotive sector to high-tech industries such as biotechnology and optoelectronics. A strong skilled trades sector and a growing service sector also contribute to Thuringia's economic strength.
The manufacturing sector has been the engine of growth for years, with its gross value added increasing by approximately 30% over the last ten years. The manufacturing sector's share of Thuringia's economic output is above the national average.

Thuringian industrial exports recently reached a volume of around 14 billion euros. This continues the moderate upward trend of recent years.
Vehicle parts remained in particularly high demand, followed by plastic products, electrical equipment, and measuring, control, and regulation technology products. Pharmaceutical products are also playing an increasingly important role in the Free State's export mix.
The most important sales markets for Thuringian products remain the USA, China, France and Austria, as well as other European neighboring countries.
