Perspective Schloss Reinhardsbrunn

A true idyll surrounded by pristine nature and rustling forests: Thuringian Reinhardsbrunn Castle with its adjacent parklands is a precious architectural and cultural monument of supra-regional importance. On currently abandoned grounds, architectural splendor and historical diversity converge. The expansive area in the midst of the northwestern Thuringian Forest lies centrally in Germany's green heart. Not far from the residential city of Gotha, only about 35 kilometers as the crow flies from the state capital Erfurt, the elegant estate is located in the beautiful spa town of Friedrichroda. The unique site is considered the "cradle of medieval Thuringia“ and looks back on a history of more than 1,000 years, shaped by the changes of numerous epochs since 1085.

In a process unique nationwide, the Free State of Thuringia succeeded in 2021 in expropriating the owners of Reinhardsbrunn Castle, whose building fabric was threatened by neglect. Since then, the property on historic grounds has been secured and renovated with state funds in a usage-neutral manner. This affects both the listed building stock and the extensive park facilities with their total of 15 hectares.

The goal is to develop a sustainable development strategy for Reinhardsbrunn through a broad-based, participatory discovery process. With the active involvement of various stakeholders from the most diverse areas of our society, a future-oriented usage concept is to be jointly developed and implemented.

Kick-off event

On June 9, 2023, around 60 invited experts and stakeholders met at the AHORN Berghotel Friedrichroda. As part of an expert conference, the next steps in the future usage-finding process for Schloss Reinhardsbrunn were comprehensively discussed, the work results of the professional exchange were presented, and a concrete development strategy was jointly defined. Following introductory remarks by Minister President Bodo Ramelow and State Secretary Tina Beer, the project team of LEG Thüringen provided detailed information about the location. Project developer Frank Sonnabend reported on the Defensionskaserne Erfurt as a current best practice example.
