What do you do with a 2,400-hectare military training area that is no longer needed after the withdrawal of Russian armed forces? That was the big question in 1994 when we were tasked with finding a meaningful reuse for the former military area Eisenach Kindel on behalf of the state of Thuringia. About 75 percent of the area was subsequently cleared of munitions and incorporated into the Hainich National Park. Due to its favorable transport location and infrastructural conditions, the former military airfield at Kindel and the area of the former garrison were particularly suitable for sustainable economic development. Over the past decades, we have therefore developed the site into an attractive industrial location with an adjacent commercial airfield, where around 10 companies are now based.
