What do you do with a 2,400-hectare military training area that is no longer needed after the withdrawal of Russian forces? That was the big question in 1994 when we were tasked by the state of Thuringia with finding a sensible new use for the former Eisenach-Kindel military area. Approximately 75 percent of the area was subsequently cleared of munitions and incorporated into the Hainich National Park. Due to its convenient location and existing infrastructure, the former military airfield at Kindel and the area of the former garrison were particularly well-suited for sustainable economic development. Over the past decades, we have therefore transformed the area into an attractive industrial site with an adjacent airfield, where around 10 companies are now located.
