Following the implementation of consistent conversion measures, an attractive industrial park has developed on the northeastern edge of Altenburg, in the border region of Thuringia, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt, on what was formerly a military site. It lies at the heart of the burgeoning Central German economic regions of Leipzig, Halle, Chemnitz, Zwickau, and Jena – with connections to major transport routes. Since December 2013, the city of Altenburg has been directly connected to Leipzig's city center, the Leipzig Trade Fair, and Leipzig/Halle Airport via the Central German S-Bahn (suburban railway). Thus, the Altenburg "North-East I – III" industrial parks benefit from excellent transport links and proximity to neighboring metropolitan areas.
