Amt Wachsenburg, 9 March 2018 – Thuringia's Minister for Economy, Science and Digital Society Wolfgang Tiefensee on Friday, during a ceremonial session, laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new e‑commerce logistics centre of XXXLutz at the “Erfurter Kreuz” and thus gave the start signal for the large‑scale project of the Europe‑wide furniture retailer. On the roughly 25‑hectare site, the family‑owned company is investing about 90 million euros and aims to create up to 400 new, future‑proof jobs by the final completion in 2022. XXXLutz is taking the next decisive step in its rapidly growing e‑commerce segment and is further integrating the synergy between traditional brick‑and‑mortar retail and online business. “I am pleased that the XXXLutz group wants to drive its further growth from Thuringia,” said Tiefensee. The Free State has once again convinced with its central location and good transport connections. “With this settlement, Thuringia further expands its position as a leading logistics location in Germany.” From a labour‑market policy perspective, the minister highlighted the broad range of activities that will arise in the new logistics centre. “Here, employees with very different qualifications and career backgrounds will be employed,” the minister added. The decisive factor for the decision to build the new e‑commerce logistics centre in Amt Wachsenburg on the outskirts of Erfurt was the perfectly comprehensive infrastructural location, which is indispensable for a distribution centre in order to guarantee fast deliveries to customers and to be able to react within a very short time. “These are the basic prerequisites that the site at the Erfurter Kreuz perfectly combines,” emphasized Alois Kobler, responsible managing director of XXXLutz Germany: “In addition, we have received very strong support here from the ministry and the state development corporation, which is by no means a given. Wolfgang Tiefensee’s presence here today underlines the extraordinary commitment of politics and the state development corporation to further advance the region with actions – for which we would also like to express our sincere thanks at this point. And already today we can proudly say that we feel very comfortable here ..” XXXLutz already operates a logistics centre in nearby Apfelstädt. “For the industrial area ‘Erfurter Kreuz’, which LEG has successfully developed and marketed for over ten years, the forward‑looking investment by XXXLutz represents an attractive enrichment and up‑grading,” said LEG CEO Andreas Krey at the foundation‑stone ceremony.
On the 25-hectare site, over 200,000 square meters of storage space will be created in a highly technical logistics center. The new building will also integrate office and training rooms. In addition to jobs in the warehouse area, specialized positions will also be successively created at the "Erfurter Kreuz“: programmers, web designers, and call center employees will be sought in the future, as will staff in order processing. XXXLutz will also train young people in these professions here. The foundation stone for another milestone in XXXLutz's success story has been laid – and the schedule for the implementation of the new building in Thuringia is ambitious: The first construction phase with an operating area of around 75,000 square meters is to be completed in late summer 2019. By then, 250 employees will also be able to take up their new positions. The overall project will be completed in 2022 according to the current plans.
