Wolfgang Tiefensee lays the foundation stone for XXXLutz at the "Erfurt Cross"

• XXXLutz is investing around 90 million euros in the major project, creating up to 400 new jobs with great future prospects in the region

Wachsenburg District, March 9, 2018 – Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringia's Minister for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society, laid the foundation stone for XXXLutz's new e-commerce logistics center at the "Erfurter Kreuz" interchange on Friday, officially launching the major project for the pan-European furniture retailer. The owner-managed family business is investing around €90 million in the approximately 25-hectare site and plans to create up to 400 new and future-proof jobs by its completion in 2022. XXXLutz is taking the next decisive step in its rapidly growing e-commerce segment, further expanding the integration of traditional brick-and-mortar retail with its online business. "I am delighted that the XXXLutz Group intends to drive its continued growth from Thuringia," said Tiefensee. He added that the Free State had once again impressed with its central location and excellent transport connections. "With this new facility, Thuringia is further strengthening its position as a leading logistics hub in Germany." From a labor market policy perspective, the minister emphasized the wide range of jobs being created at the new logistics center. "Employees with very different qualifications and work histories will be employed here," the minister stated. The decisive factor in choosing to build the new e-commerce logistics center in Amt Wachsenburg, just outside Erfurt, was the perfectly situated infrastructure, which is essential for a distribution center to guarantee customers fast deliveries and enable rapid response times. “These are fundamental requirements that the location here at the Erfurter Kreuz perfectly combines,” emphasizes Alois Kobler, Managing Director of XXXLutz Germany. “Furthermore, we have received tremendous support from the Ministry and the State Development Corporation, which is by no means a given. The fact that Wolfgang Tiefensee is here today underscores the exceptional commitment of politicians and the State Development Corporation to actively moving the region forward – for which we would like to express our sincere gratitude. And we can already proudly say that we feel very much at home here!” XXXLutz already operates a logistics center in nearby Apfelstädt. “For the ‘Erfurter Kreuz’ industrial park, which LEG has been successfully developing and marketing for over ten years, XXXLutz’s forward-looking investment represents an attractive addition and enhancement,” said LEG Managing Director Andreas Krey at the groundbreaking ceremony.
On the 25-hectare site, over 200,000 square meters of warehouse space will be built in a state-of-the-art logistics center. The new building will also integrate office and training facilities. In addition to warehouse jobs, specialized positions will be created at the "Erfurter Kreuz" site: programmers, web designers, and call center employees will be sought in the future, as well as order processing staff. XXXLutz will also train young people in these professions. The foundation stone for another milestone in XXXLutz's success story has been laid – and the timeline for the construction of the new building in Thuringia is ambitious: the first construction phase, with an operating area of ​​approximately 75,000 square meters, is scheduled for completion in late summer 2019. By then, 250 employees will have started their new jobs. According to current plans, the entire project will be completed in 2022.
