Where Hemingway discovered Thuringia's beautiful sides..

Thuringia offers enchanting natural landscapes and attractive dining and hotel options – one example is the “Saxenhof” in the southwest of the federal state. In this traditional establishment, Austrian Emperor Franz I, the poet Ernest Hemingway, and the GDR politician Günter Schabowski have all been pampered. The celebrities were drawn to the scenic Rhön region, which many call “Germany's most beautiful low mountain range.”.

The “Saxenhof” breathes history: the building was erected in Dermbach in 1623, and today guests stay in a charming, listed half-timbered house that was extensively reconstructed in 2009. 27 rooms and five large apartments in the quiet annex invite guests. The culinary side is in the hands of star chef and managing director Björn Leist, who this year won the Thuringian Tourism Award with the „Rhöner Botschaft“ has won the Thuringian Tourism Award. The wellness area includes, among other things, a Finnish sauna, steam bath, ice pool, and Kneipp pool. The surroundings invite you to hike, mountain bike, or even fish: it was the diverse opportunities for fly fishing that in 1931 drew Ernest Hemingway to this beautiful corner of Thuringia. (hw)
