Weimar: University of Music actively cultivates the legacy of Franz Liszt

Culture has a tradition in Thuringia – and is actively continued in many places. Example Weimar: In the city of classics, not only world literati such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller worked, but also composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Franz Liszt. The latter initiated the founding of an educational institution for musicians 150 years ago – which celebrated its anniversary these days as the “Franz Liszt University of Music”.

The renowned artists' academy was once the first orchestral school in Germany. To this day, it fulfills its mission of training professional musicians at the highest international level. The university not only provides training but also hosts a wide variety of events – its program includes more than 300 concerts and performances per year, the Weimar Master Classes with their 60-year tradition, as well as four international competitions for piano, violin, and chamber music. “The Franz Liszt University of Music, with its diverse events, is an important part of the art and culture scene in the Free State,” said Thuringia's Minister-President Bodo Ramelow on the occasion of the anniversary ceremony at the end of June in Weimar.
