According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office for the reporting period 2024, Thuringia was able to increase its export volume in value terms by 1 percent to 18.6 billion EUR. Thuringia's imports, on the other hand, fell by 6.2 percent to 17.8 billion EUR. For the first time since 2021, a positive foreign trade balance of just under one billion EUR was again recorded. The total trade volume amounted to 36.4 billion EUR. For the Federal Republic, there are partly opposing or less pronounced developments: the federal export volume shrank by 1.2 percent and the import volume by 3.0 percent.
In a more detailed analysis of the developments, interesting shifts become apparent for the Free State. In Europe, Thuringia was able to expand its foreign business by almost 2 percent: especially in Poland, Luxembourg, Ukraine and the UK the dynamics were particularly strong; conversely, sales were declining in Austria, France or Hungary. When looking at the absolute numbers in a global comparison, the most important Thuringian export market, the USA, recorded the largest value‑wise export increase, whereas the previously second‑most important export market, China, had to record the steepest decline.
