Thuringia invests heavily in storage research

The battery of the future is to come from Jena: On the campus of Friedrich Schiller University, two extension buildings of the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC) are being constructed. On a total area of 4,000 m², which includes laboratories and office space, researchers will work from 2023/24 on, among other things, new materials for energy storage. After completion, which is planned for next year, it should be possible to transfer the research results into later production and already produce larger quantities of the desired products on site.

"Energy storage is a key technology of the 21st century,“ said Thuringia's Minister of Science Wolfgang Tiefensee, when he attended the topping-out ceremony for the buildings in June together with Building Minister Susanna Karawanskij. The energy transition would not be possible without powerful storage systems; the Ukraine crisis has given the topic a whole new urgency. The total costs of the construction project amount to just over 54 million euros, borne by the federal government, the state, and the Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss foundations. Around 13 million euros are co-financed with funds from the European Union within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In addition to storage technologies, CEEC Jena is also developing solutions for photovoltaics and hydrogen technology. (hw)
