Thuringia is investing heavily in storage research

The battery of the future is set to come from Jena: Two extension buildings for the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC) are being constructed on the campus of Friedrich Schiller University. Covering a total area of 4,000 m², including laboratories and offices, researchers will work on new materials for energy storage, among other things, starting in 2023/24. After completion, planned for next year, it should be possible to translate the research results into later production and manufacture larger quantities of the desired products on site.

“Energy storage is a key technology of the 21st century,” said Thuringia’s Science Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, when he and Construction Minister Susanna Karawanskij attended the topping-out ceremony for the buildings in June. The energy transition is impossible without high-performance storage; the Ukraine crisis has given the issue a whole new level of urgency. The total cost of the construction project amounts to just over 54 million euros, covered by the federal government, the state of Thuringia, and the Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss Foundations. Around 13 million euros are being co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). In addition to storage technologies, CEEC Jena is also developing solutions for photovoltaics and hydrogen technology, among other things. (hw)
