The city of Hermsdorf receives around 16 million euros in funding for the development of the industrial area "Hermsdorf Ost III“. The construction work with investment costs of around 18.2 million euros is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. "We are passing a milestone today for the economic orientation of the Saale-Holzland district and hope that this industrial area will soon bear fruit. The city of Hermsdorf is taking a huge step towards the future today with the goal of being able to exist even more independently,” emphasizes Hermsdorf's mayor Benny Hofmann.
"We are developing the site in a dynamic region where we have recently been able to successfully initiate and support major settlements with Amazon in Gera and Hahn & Karl in Eisenberg," said Andreas Krey, Managing Director of the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG), which is developing the area. "We also want to remain competitive in the future, and we guarantee this with this current project in Hermsdorf."
The industrial area is to be developed on a site along the A4 in the direction of Dresden between the Hermsdorfer Kreuz and the Hermsdorf-Ost junction. The aim is to market it to companies with a space requirement of at least eight to ten hectares. The city of Hermsdorf intends to develop a total of 55 hectares of arable land for potential major investors. The development includes traffic facilities, rainwater and wastewater disposal, water supply, as well as site clearance and compensatory measures.
As part of the site clearance, archaeological preliminary investigations and, if necessary, excavations of archaeological finds are carried out on the prehistoric settlement areas. The area is also examined for contaminated sites. In the western part of the industrial area, a stub road with a turning facility will be constructed, enabling access for Giga-Liner trucks. A separate sewer system is designed for the drainage of the area. Since rainwater can only be discharged into the Rauda river at a throttled rate, retention basins are planned. As part of the compensatory measures, woody plants will be planted around the area, and a brownfield site and a meadow orchard in Dornburg-Camburg will be recultivated.
The project is part of the large-area initiative adopted by the state government in 2010. With this, the Free State of Thuringia is pursuing a long-term, active commercial and industrial land reserve for companies willing to settle that require an area of at least five hectares. The Thuringian large-area initiative includes eight projects with a gross area of over 1,097 hectares and a net area of over 836 hectares. A total of 386 hectares net have been developed so far.
