The town of Hermsdorf will receive approximately €16 million in funding for the development of the "Hermsdorf East III" industrial park. Construction, with investment costs of around €18.2 million, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024. "With its central location and large area, the industrial park offers excellent conditions for companies with significant space requirements," said Minister of Economic Affairs Wolfgang Tiefensee at the handover of the GRW funding notification to Mayor Benny Hofmann. “Today we are passing a milestone for the economic development of the Saale-Holzland district and hope that this industrial park will soon bear fruit. The town of Hermsdorf is taking a giant step towards the future today with the aim of being able to exist even more independently,” emphasizes Hermsdorf's mayor, Benny Hofmann.
“We are developing the site in a dynamic region where we have recently been able to successfully initiate and support major business developments, such as Amazon in Gera and Hahn & Karl in Eisenberg,” said Andreas Krey, Managing Director of the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG), which is developing the area. “We also want to remain competitive in the future, and this current project in Hermsdorf ensures that.”
The industrial park is planned for an area along the A4 motorway towards Dresden, between the Hermsdorf interchange and the Hermsdorf-East exit. The aim is to market the land to companies requiring at least eight to ten hectares. The town of Hermsdorf intends to develop a total of 55 hectares of agricultural land for potential major investors. This development includes transport infrastructure, stormwater and wastewater disposal, water supply, site preparation, and compensatory measures.
As part of the site preparation, preliminary archaeological investigations and, if necessary, excavations of archaeological finds will be carried out on the prehistoric settlement areas. The area will also be investigated for contaminated sites. In the western part of the industrial park, a cul-de-sac with a turning area will be constructed to allow access for large trucks. A separate drainage system is planned for the area. Since rainwater can only be discharged into the Rauda River at a controlled rate, rainwater retention basins are planned. As part of the compensatory measures, trees and shrubs will be planted around the area, and a brownfield site and an orchard in Dornburg-Camburg will be recultivated.
This project is part of the large-scale development initiative adopted by the state government in 2010. With this initiative, the Free State of Thuringia is actively securing long-term commercial and industrial land for companies seeking to establish operations with a land requirement of five hectares or more. The Thuringian large-scale development initiative comprises eight projects with a gross area of over 1,097 hectares and a net area of over 836 hectares. To date, a net area of 386 hectares has been developed.
