The state takes over former Bundeswehr base Mühlhausen

Tiefensee: First major step for development and marketing
The Free State of Thuringia is taking over the former Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) site, Görmar Barracks, in Mühlhausen. Representatives of the Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA) and LEG Thüringen signed a purchase agreement to this effect in Erfurt on Thursday, December 11. According to the agreement, LEG will acquire, develop, and market the 35.4-hectare site on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The purchase price amounts to nearly €2.8 million. The Bundeswehr will hand over the site by December 31. "With the acquisition of this property, we have created a key prerequisite for developing and marketing the barracks together with the city of Mühlhausen," said Thuringia's Minister of Economic Affairs, Wolfgang Tiefensee. Further steps will follow. "The state is committed to Mühlhausen. We want to create a business location here that is attractive to potential investors from Germany and abroad." “This sale has once again achieved what the Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA) always strives for with such properties, but which isn't always successful: a seamless transition between the return of the property by the German Armed Forces and its takeover by the buyer,” said Hans-Arno Simon, Head of Sales at the BImA in Erfurt. Last year, LEG, commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, jointly developed a feasibility study and a site development concept for the Görmar Barracks with the city of Mühlhausen. As a first step, the existing infrastructure will be disentangled and initial conversion measures undertaken in the coming months. The basis for this development is an urban development agreement. The site's infrastructure, buildings, and properties are in good condition. Furthermore, the training and exercise area to the north offers expansion options for the development of larger, contiguous industrial areas. Marketing of the site is already underway: a dedicated website has been set up (www.goermar-kaserne-muehlhausen.de), and the project was also presented at the Expo Real trade fair for business locations and real estate in Munich at the beginning of October. A business day was held at the site on October 24th.
