With the new product called IBUvolt NMO, the production of batteries is to be possible in the future without lithium and other rare raw materials. NMO is predominantly composed of materials that are abundant in nature, including sodium, which can be obtained from sea salt and salt domes, and manganese, the third most common metal. The company succeeded in developing a two-stage process that enables noticeably more energy-efficient manufacturing than many other processes. In addition, the new battery type is considered very safe. The material is particularly well-suited for use in smaller electric vehicles, such as those that navigate through city centers. Jörg Leinenbach, CEO of IBU-tec, explains: “For LFP cathode material (lithium iron phosphate), IBU-tec is already the technology leader in Europe. With the sodium-ion battery, the next generation of innovative batteries is already in the starting blocks – and IBU-tec is once again among the pioneers and innovation drivers.
