Ministry of Economic Affairs promotes further expansion of the Erfurter Kreuz industrial area

With nearly eight million euros, the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs is funding the further expansion of the industrial area "Erfurter Kreuz“. Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee today symbolically handed over the funding decision to the municipality of Wachsenburg. "The 'Erfurter Kreuz' has become one of the most important industrial areas in Thuringia“ due to numerous company settlements and its good connections, said Tiefensee. "The further expansion ensures the development of the large industrial area into a supraregionally recognized and highly attractive location for companies.“ The investment sum for the project is over 9.3 million. As part of the project, the municipality of Amt Wachsenburg intends to expand the Erfurter Kreuz by the third construction phase "Erfurter Kreuz West, southern part" and develop it as a commercial area to make it attractive for company settlements. This includes, among other things, a road network, drinking water supply, and terrain regulation. Construction measures are scheduled to begin in January and be completed by the end of 2018. The city of Arnstadt has already developed 197 hectares of land in the first two construction phases. The project is funded under the GRW program for the expansion of business-related infrastructure. The development of the area is carried out by the State Development Company Thuringia (LEG). EFG GmbH Suhl is responsible for project management. The expansion of the Erfurter Kreuz industrial area is part of the large-area initiative of the Free State of Thuringia, which includes a total of eight locations. By 2030, up to 600 hectares of industrial and commercial space are to be developed at these locations, depending on demand. The funded industrial and commercial areas in the Central Thuringia planning region are currently about 80 percent utilized. About the Erfurt Cross The economic area around the "Erfurter Kreuz“ has great economic significance for the entire region with its resident companies and a total of over 9,000 jobs. As the largest industrial area in Thuringia, the "Erfurter Kreuz“ has thus developed in recent years into an important location for settlements and the economic engine of Central Thuringia. Key industry sectors are metal and electrical industries, mechanical engineering, the food industry, and solar technology. The increasing importance of the area is evident from the settlement of companies such as IHI Charging Systems International GmbH with a plant for the production of state-of-the-art turbochargers for diesel and gasoline engines, N3 Engine Overhaul Services with the most modern European maintenance facility for aircraft engines, or the Spanish automotive supplier Gonvauto.
