ERFURT_ Making Thuringia's city centers more resilient and attractive in order to preserve them as social, cultural, and economic centers – this is the goal of the Thuringian action alliance “City Centers with a Future”. At its 3rd alliance meeting on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, in Suhl, the alliance will present a position paper that includes, among other things, an action plan for the coming months. A key focus here is the appeal to the parties represented in the Thuringian state parliament to continue to provide the financial basis for the alliance's work.
The Thuringian action alliance “Innenstädte mit Zukunft” was founded in 2021 on the initiative of the Erfurt Chamber of Industry and Commerce and now comprises more than 50 institutions, including ministries, municipalities, associations, city managers, and practitioners. The LEG Thüringen operates the office and organizes the regular alliance meetings. On November 26, a large number of members will come together to discuss the position paper and the action plan. In addition to the demand regarding financial resources, the position paper contains further proposals for future cooperation: these include the development and implementation of new exchange and project formats, for example, the announcement of a city center competition. Furthermore, the alliance aims to continuously increase the number of its members. Another key goal is to raise the alliance's profile throughout the state and to have a stronger impact in rural regions and their small towns. In cooperation with the ministries, the funding structures relevant to the enhancement of city centers are also to be continuously optimized. The evaluation of existing funding programs and the assessment of current needs and challenges in urban development are central elements of the alliance's work. From the outset, a focus has been on adapting existing funding instruments – a priority that will continue to significantly shape the content design in the future.
A central program item of the event is a panel discussion with representatives of the Thuringian state parliamentary groups, in which the politicians' positions on the position paper are examined. Further content addressed at the alliance meeting is based on the work of the three working groups, which are dedicated to central concerns of contemporary inner-city development. This includes the topic of "Living and Life in the City" and thus an increased attractiveness of inner cities, as well as the topics of "Vacancy Management" and "Climate". The latter working group has initiated the project "Wandering Tree Avenue", within the framework of which mobile and temporarily limited urban greening through trees is created in various streets of an inner city, with the green corridors being able to "move" from one street to another. The project is being continued, and the cities of Sömmerda, Leinefelde-Worbis, and Rudolstadt are receiving funding approval notices. Rudolstadt's mayor Jörg Reichl will accept the notice for his city on the occasion of the alliance meeting.
