The city of Mühlhausen receives over 9.3 million euros in funding for the further development of the industrial area "Görmar-Kaserne". Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee today handed over the GRW funding decision to Mayor Dr. Johannes Bruns. The development, with investment costs of over 11.4 million euros, is expected to be completed by spring 2024. "The industrial area is a core project for the development of the Mühlhausen business location. With the development of the former barracks site into a modern industrial location, the Mühlhausen business location is to be further expanded," said Economics Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee on the occasion of the handover.
Adjacent to the existing industrial and commercial area "Görmar-Kaserne", the former training and exercise grounds with a gross area of approximately 24.9 hectares are to be developed in terms of infrastructure by the Thuringian State Development Company (LEG). This includes the necessary traffic facilities, rainwater and wastewater disposal, water supply, as well as site clearance and terrain regulation.
As part of the traffic infrastructure, a new access road will connect the area to the existing public road network. The existing Lützowstraße will be upgraded as a connection to the public road network to accommodate future commercial traffic to and from the industrial area. To drain the wastewater and rainwater generated in the industrial area, two branch lines will be constructed. Water and fire-fighting water supply will be provided via the access road and Lützowstraße. To ensure the fire-fighting water supply in the industrial area, a fire-fighting water volume of 192 m³/h from the drinking water network must be guaranteed for a period of at least two hours. Therefore, underground fire-fighting water tanks with a capacity of 200 m³ will be constructed. As part of the site clearance and terrain regulation, the existing structures will be demolished and the existing north-south slope of the terrain will be leveled.
As compensation for the planned measures, hedges, grass and perennial meadows, and shrub groups will be planted on the site. Outside the site, a meadow orchard near Bollstedt and the dismantling of various buildings followed by planting in Mühlhausen are also planned.
Background on the Görmar Barracks
After the Bundeswehr's decision to withdraw from Mühlhausen, LEG Thüringen took over the 35.4-hectare area of the Görmar Barracks at the northeastern entrance of Mühlhausen on the B249 towards Sondershausen, in order to put it to civilian use. Together with the city of Mühlhausen, LEG Thüringen developed a feasibility study and a site development concept. Due to the unexpectedly high influx of people in need of protection, part of the former barracks was used as an initial reception facility for refugees (EAE) from August 2015 to mid-2016. However, this did not affect the planned commercial and industrial use of the area. As early as 2016, the state and the city of Mühlhausen began developing the former barracks as an industrial area.
