Together with their teams, they developed a technology to examine living objects using high-resolution fluorescence microscopy without disturbing them with light. To this end, they expanded the so-called lattice light-sheet microscopy and combined it with innovative optical elements. Furthermore, they created a way to handle the complex system easily and enabled the broad use of common sample carriers. This opens up entirely new possibilities for tracking and better understanding processes in cells – in basic research and in the search for new diagnostic methods or active substances against many diseases. Thanks in part to these new developments, Jena once again lives up to its name as a high-tech location for the optical industry. (gro)
