Medical technology made in Thuringia – Swiss company expands in Stadtroda

Thuringia is a good breeding ground for entrepreneurial growth: In Stadtroda near Jena, the medical technology specialist Mathys Orthopädie is now concentrating its production at one site in the Bollberg industrial area, investing over 50 million euros in its expansion and creating up to 120 new jobs. The company, which belongs to the Swiss Mathys AG Bettlach, is expanding its production capacities and also has space for future expansions at the new site. Construction is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2022; production is expected to begin in early 2024.

"LEG has intensively supported Mathys in recent years in site search and evaluation as well as in funding advice," explains LEG Managing Director Andreas Krey. "We are pleased about the expansion at the Stadtroda site; this investment shows that Thuringia is an attractive location for companies with growth potential." In its discussions, LEG was able to cite numerous advantages of the site in East Thuringia. "The industrial park is conveniently located at the intersection of the A 4 and A 9 motorways – with correspondingly fast connections to Berlin and Munich, Frankfurt and Dresden," says Dr. Arnulf Wulff, LEG authorized officer and department head. "In addition, Mathys benefits from the competencies in ceramic manufacturing and precision machining that are abundant in the Jena, Hermsdorf, and Gera region." The Swiss parent company Mathys AG Bettlach employs around 540 people worldwide and generated sales of around CHF 125 million in 2020. Since mid-2021, Mathys AG has been part of the listed US company EnovisTM. Production in Thuringia focuses on shoulder, hip, and knee prostheses. At the new 4.5-hectare site in Stadtroda, a new hall for metal production is being built on 5,000 m², and a building for ceramic production on 2,900 m², complemented by a modern office building.
