LEG Economic Development: Change at the Top

For nearly three decades, Dr. Arnulf Wulff successfully headed the department responsible for business development in Thuringia at the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG). Over the years, the department gained additional responsibilities. In addition to the settlement service for companies investing in the Free State, foreign trade promotion and the internationalization of Thuringian companies, as well as cluster management including the support of the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS), were added. At the turn of the year, the always energetic and experienced business developer is now entering his well-deserved retirement and handing over the baton to Herbert Stütz. The new department head has also been with the company for a quarter of a century and served for many years as deputy department head and team leader.

Since the 1990s, the LEG has managed around 1,800 new settlement and expansion projects; there is hardly a project in which Dr. Arnulf Wulff – also authorized signatory since 2010 – was not involved. The department's successes include major settlements such as those by CATL and N3 in Arnstadt or MDC Power in Kölleda. He took part in dozens of delegation trips to open up new markets for Thuringian companies and, for several years, was also responsible for the work of the Thuringian Energy and GreenTech Agency (ThEGA). The LEG success story, according to which around 86,000 jobs were created and investments of around 13.8 billion euros were triggered, bears his signature not least. With Herbert Stütz, who can look back on many years of experience as head of the Investment Promotion Team, an expert is taking the helm who knows the business and who has been acting expertly in the network for decades. The change sets the course – for continued successful LEG economic development in the future. (hw)

Interview

Mr. Stütz, first of all, congratulations on your new position as department head at LEG Thüringen. What has been your career path at LEG so far?

My time at LEG began in 2001 with the acquisition and support of Asian investors as a project manager. In 2015, I took over the management of the Investment Promotion team. I am now very much looking forward to this new responsible task.

What priorities will you set in the coming months?

The focus of the department naturally remains on supporting the Thuringian economy, whether in the support of company settlements or expansions of existing companies, foreign trade promotion, or driving forward innovations and supporting the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS).

Can you say anything more about specific plans?

In the new year, we are also working to make Thuringia more visible as a business and technology location. We continue to support regional economic development agencies in the municipalities. We are responding to the difficult geopolitical situation by opening up peripheral markets. And in order to better assess technology trends, we will initiate a foresight process.

Mr. Stütz, thank you very much for the brief insight.
