In Thuringia, the World Heritage Site beckons

Testimonies of unique culture and a primeval forest in the heart of Germany – the Thuringian UNESCO sites tell exciting and moving stories. On the Wartburg in Eisenach, Martin Luther translated the New Testament, the ensembles Classical Weimar and Bauhaus in Weimar span the arc from the Middle Ages to modernity, and in the Hainich National Park, nature is allowed to remain nature. Erfurt preserves particularly valuable testimonies of Jewish life and has set out to enrich the list of World Heritage.

Weimar is a true cultural universe and probably THE UNESCO city in Germany, because there are 19 World Heritage sites here. This includes classics such as the residences of Goethe and Schiller or the French‑looking summer residence Belvedere on the edge of the city. In 2023, however, the Bauhaus ensemble is in the spotlight, because a pioneering project of modernity turns 100. On the birthday of the “Haus am Horn“ Weimar this year asks the question “How will we live?“. The numerous exhibitions provide answers, such as in the Bauhaus Museum Weimar, the Nietzsche Archive or the Museum Neues Weimar. Thuringia is World Heritage land.
