Groundbreaking ceremony for the "Lützendorfer Straße residential area" project in Weimar

Today, the official groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of construction work to transform a former Soviet barracks site in Weimar-Nord into a residential area. Over the coming years, up to 150 building plots for single-family homes, semi-detached houses, multi-story buildings, and terraced houses will be developed, totaling 85,000 square meters of net living space. The state of Thuringia is financing the construction project with up to three million euros.
 
The former barracks site is to be transformed into an attractive residential area in a good location with excellent transport links. "A city like Weimar, which is developing and growing so well, needs attractive housing," emphasized Economics Minister Tiefensee at today's groundbreaking ceremony. He added that converting the former military site into residential space would also eliminate urban planning deficiencies.
 
“We expect to be able to market the area successfully, as the numerous expressions of interest we have already received demonstrate the high demand for the building plots,” explains Andreas Krey, Managing Director of the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG), which is implementing the project. Weimar's Mayor Stefan Wolf also anticipates strong demand, stating that “the development of the former barracks site will make a significant contribution to meeting the existing housing needs in the city.”
 
The project is scheduled for completion within eight years. The first construction phase, encompassing approximately one-third of the area, will allow for the creation of up to 50 building plots. This phase will also include the construction of road infrastructure, including lighting, drainage and water supply systems, as well as civil engineering works for telecommunications, electricity, and heating infrastructure. A noise barrier will be erected along the B7 bypass. In recent years, unusable buildings have been demolished and contaminated sites have been remediated. A development agreement between the city of Weimar and LEG was signed in January 2017. The site will be marketed in phases, according to demand.
 
Via the barracks area Lützendorfer Straße The former inner-city barracks area in northern Weimar, north of Lützendorfer Straße, was used by the Western Group of Forces (WGT) until the early 1990s. The site contained accommodation and administrative buildings, as well as a technical area with numerous military outbuildings. The barracks originally covered a total area of ​​approximately 23 hectares. Part of the land is already privately owned and used for residential purposes or for a vocational training center. In 1994, the Free State of Thuringia acquired a total of 110 former WGT properties from the federal government in order to convert them into areas for housing, commerce, industry, recreation, or nature conservation.
