Groundbreaking ceremony for the project "Wohngebiet Lützendorfer Straße" in Weimar

With the first groundbreaking ceremony, construction work officially begins today to convert a former Soviet barracks area in Weimar-Nord into a residential area. In the coming years, up to 150 building plots for single-family homes, semi-detached houses, multi-story buildings, and terraced houses with a net area of 85,000 square meters are to be developed. The state of Thuringia is financing the construction measures with up to three million euros.
 
The former barracks site is thus to be transformed into an attractive residential area in a good location with good transport links. "A city like Weimar, which is developing and growing excellently, needs attractive living space,“ emphasized Economics Minister Tiefensee at today's groundbreaking ceremony. The conversion of former military land into residential space could also eliminate urban development deficiencies.
 
"We assume that we can market the area well, because the numerous expressions of interest already received show the great demand for the building plots," explains Andreas Krey, Managing Director of the Thuringian State Development Company (LEG), which is implementing the project. Weimar's Mayor Stefan Wolf also expects high demand, because "the development of the former barracks area makes an important contribution to meeting the existing housing needs in the city."
 
The project is expected to be completed within eight years. In the first construction phase, which covers about one third of the area, up to 50 building plots can be created. In addition, road traffic facilities including lighting, drainage and water supply systems as well as civil engineering works for telecommunications, electricity and heat supply systems are to be realized. A noise barrier will be erected at the bypass of federal highway B7. In recent years, unusable building fabric has been demolished and contaminated sites have been remediated. A corresponding contract for the development of the area was signed between the city of Weimar and LEG in January 2017. The marketing of the site will be carried out in stages and according to demand.
 
About the Lützendorfer Straße Barracks Area The former inner-city barracks area in the north of Weimar, north of Lützendorfer Straße, was used by the Western Group of Forces (WGF) until the early 1990s. The site contained accommodation and administration buildings as well as a technical area with numerous military purpose-built structures. The barracks site originally covered a total area of approximately 23 hectares. Part of the area is already in private hands and is used for residential purposes or for the operation of a vocational training center. The Free State of Thuringia took over a total of 110 former WGF properties from the federal government in 1994 in order to convert them into areas for housing, commerce, industry, leisure or nature conservation.
