Groundbreaking ceremony for further development of the "Görmar-Kaserne" industrial and commercial area in Mühlhausen

Together with Mühlhausen's Mayor Dr. Johannes Bruns, LEG Managing Director Andreas Krey, and the District Administrator of the Unstrut-Hainich district, Harald Zanker, Minister of Economic Affairs Wolfgang Tiefensee today broke ground on the further expansion of the "Görmar-Kaserne" industrial and commercial park. Development is scheduled for completion by spring 2024, and the first investments on the developed land are expected to begin in mid-2023. The city of Mühlhausen is investing over €11.4 million in the expansion, with the state contributing €9.3 million in funding from GRW (Joint Task for the Improvement of Regional Economic Structures) funds. "The further expansion of the industrial and commercial park is a key project for the development of Mühlhausen as a business location. It will create attractive spaces for companies with large space requirements," said Minister of Economic Affairs Wolfgang Tiefensee at the groundbreaking ceremony. 

“With the development of this area, we are expanding the range of attractive commercial properties in Mühlhausen, especially larger plots,” emphasized LEG Managing Director Andreas Krey. “Here we are creating another example of the successful conversion of formerly military-used areas in Thuringia.”

“This step will strengthen Mühlhausen as a business location and have a positive impact on the region. Together with the upcoming connection to the B 247 bypass in the immediate vicinity and the expansion of further industrial areas at Schadeberg, on which we are already working, we are creating great potential for business development,” said Dr. Johannes Bruns, Mayor of Mühlhausen.

Adjacent to the existing commercially used areas at the Görmar barracks site, the former training and exercise grounds, with a gross area of ​​approximately 20 hectares, are to be developed with infrastructure by the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG). This includes transport facilities, rainwater and wastewater disposal, water supply, as well as site preparation and land leveling.

As part of the transport infrastructure project, a new access road will connect the area to the existing public road network. The existing Lützowstraße will be upgraded to provide access to the public road network and accommodate future commercial traffic to and from the industrial park. Two drainage systems will be constructed to handle wastewater and stormwater runoff from the industrial park. Water and fire-fighting water supply will be provided via the access road and Lützowstraße. To ensure a reliable fire-fighting water supply for the industrial park, a flow rate of 192 m³/h from the drinking water network must be guaranteed for a minimum of two hours. Therefore, underground fire-fighting water reservoirs with a capacity of 200 m³ each will be constructed. During site preparation and landscaping, existing structures will be demolished and the existing north-south slope of the terrain will be leveled. 

To compensate for the planned measures, hedges, grass and herbaceous vegetation, as well as groups of shrubs, will be planted on the site. Outside the site, an orchard near Bollstedt and the demolition of various buildings followed by planting in Mühlhausen are also planned.

Background information on the Görmar barracks

Following the German Armed Forces' decision to withdraw from Mühlhausen, LEG Thüringen took over the 35.4-hectare site of the Görmar Barracks at the northeastern entrance to Mühlhausen on the B249 towards Sondershausen, with the intention of converting it to civilian use. LEG Thüringen in cooperation with the city of Mühlhausen, developed a feasibility study and a site development concept. Due to the unexpectedly high influx of people in need of protection, part of the former barracks was used as an initial reception center for refugees from August 2015 to mid-2016. In 2016, the state and the city of Mühlhausen began developing the former barracks into an industrial and commercial park. Since 2017, the district administration, among others, has been using various buildings on the site.
