Apolda lies between Weimar and Jena, two cities that, with the Weimar Classicism around Goethe and Schiller, the Bauhaus, and the Jena Romantics around Schelling and Novalis, are home to a cultural heritage of world renown. This inspiring neighborhood was also the driving force behind the active association “Kunstverein Apolda Avangarde e. V.“, founded in 1994, which, together with the district town and the district, established the Kunsthaus Apolda Avangarde in 1995. Since then, 600,000 visitors have experienced sensational exhibitions here; for example, the association's projects have been dedicated to artists such as Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Andy Warhol. For the current Chagall exhibition, the Museum Pablo Picasso in Münster provided the exhibits as loans – among them are a large number of unique pieces and rare state and proof prints by the century's artist.
