Climate action in Azmannsdorf is underway: Families with children plant trees for the climate

Action weekend by LEG-Sommerschule e. V. and the Local Alliance of the City of Erfurt / Professional support from the German Forest Protection Association (SDW)

ERFURT_ Doing good for the environment and climate, learning new things, and getting something started together – all this is offered by the large tree planting campaign in Azmannsdorf, which started today, Friday, October 22, 2021, and takes place until Sunday, October 24. The event is organized by the association "LEG-Sommerschule – Unternehmen engagieren sich für Familie e. V.", which is closely connected to LEG through its board and association work. The cooperation partner of the association for the event is the local alliance "Stark für Familie – Stark für Erfurt". Also on board as supporters are the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW) and the municipality of Azmannsdorf. "Our family campaign under the motto 'We plant for the climate. Your future forest. Our tree planting campaign' combines fun, learning experiences, and environmental engagement in the most pleasant way," said LEG Managing Director Sabine Wosche at the opening. "Over the next three days, families will plant trees on a green area in eastern Erfurt, thus contributing to more sustainability and climate friendliness as well as to a better quality of life in the city." "Planting 1,200 trees on half a football field is a small generational project. In a few decades, this should become a forest. It helps climate protection, provides habitat for plants and animals, and creates recreational areas for people. It is nice and important that many citizens – especially children – can participate in this sustainable future design," emphasized Erfurt's Mayor Andreas Bausewein.

The experts of the SDW guide all participants in tree planting as part of the campaign and provide them with exciting information on the topic of “Tree, Forest and Environment”. In addition, there is a varied supporting program for the whole family, a free drink and a bratwurst for all children, as well as a tree planting certificate for all young participants. Furthermore, at the “Wishes for my tree” station, all little tree planters can send a wish for the planted tree on its way. The event was opened on Friday morning by Sabine Wosche and Andreas Bausewein, as well as Peter Zaiß, Managing Director of SWE Stadtwerke Erfurt GmbH, Tobias Söllner, Managing Director of the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald, Landesverband Thüringen e. V., and Jens Bose, local mayor of Azmannsdorf.

It has long been known that trees have a beneficial effect on environmental and quality of life, especially in urban areas. Planting them and thus sowing the seed for a green source of life is an unforgettable experience for all participants, young and old. The SDW has been successfully carrying out similar campaigns throughout Germany for years. In Thuringia, the SDW has made it its mission to plant a tree for every one of the 320,000 children living in the state. The "LEG-Sommerschule e. V.“ is contributing to this project with its action weekend at the end of October, during which children are expressly invited to plant trees themselves. Sponsors of the campaign are LEG, the Thüringer Aufbaubank (TAB), as well as the city administration of Erfurt and the Stadtwerke Erfurt Group. The area in Azmannsdorf was selected by experts. A total of 1,500 trees have been jointly financed by all partners and can now be planted.
