CATL takes off – Europe's largest battery cell production ceremoniously opened

Thuringia is the site of one of the largest investments of this kind in Europe, and at the beginning of the year a significant milestone was celebrated here: The Chinese global market leader Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) officially started its production of lithium-ion cells here at the end of January. CATL is investing 2 billion euros in the first manufacturing facility outside China in the "Erfurter Kreuz" industrial area; up to 2,000 jobs will be created.

Production ramp-up proceeded as planned after COVID-related delays: Manufacturing initially started on two module lines, and by the end of 2023, the planned six lines are expected to be operational, achieving an output of 24 GWh/year. The number of employees has meanwhile grown to around 1,000. The ceremonial inauguration was attended by Thuringia's Minister-President Bodo Ramelow, Economics Minister Tiefensee, Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund, as well as representatives of LEG Thüringen, who are significantly involved in managing the investment project. At the site south of Thuringia's capital Erfurt, the company concentrates not only manufacturing but also research and development, and the European logistics hub was established at the nearby GVZ Erfurt. The Free State is developing into one of the most innovative regions for e-mobility. Among other things, the state recently also supported the establishment of the Battery Innovation and Technology Center (BITC), which already cooperates with CATL. (hw)
