At the Thuringian Innovation Center for Mobility (ThIMo) at Technical University Ilmenau, the new research group BiRaUM (Bistatic Radar Signatures of Traffic Objects as a Link between Environment Perception and Mobile Communication) is researching innovative technologies for automated and connected driving. The goal is to significantly improve the perception capabilities of vehicles through radar and future 6G communication systems, thereby increasing safety and efficiency in road traffic.

The focus is on the question of how different traffic objects are detected by communication and radar systems and how their reflection properties can be precisely measured. To this end, the research team uses the unique infrastructure of ThIMo, in particular the new bistatic radar reflectivity measurement system “BiRa“. The developed methods are intended to help automated vehicles in the future to perceive their surroundings faster and more reliably, recognize dangers at an early stage, and exchange information efficiently.
