Artistic enjoyment in a unique setting

In summer, culture enthusiasts from all over flock to Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia: Against the imposing backdrop of Cathedral Hill, the Cathedral Steps Festival takes place here annually. This year, the Theater Erfurt is presenting Hector Berlioz's opera "La Damnation de Faust" (The Damnation of Faust) – and is attempting to surpass last year's record of 44,453 tickets sold.

The cathedral steps, with the imposing St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Severus' Cathedral behind them, form a unique and unforgettable stage for the audience. Against this backdrop, Berlioz's dramatic and emotionally resonant adaptation of the "Faust" story, his impulsive and captivating music, promises an extraordinary artistic experience. In addition to the performances, accompanying lectures offer further insights into the "Faust" theme. The basis of Berlioz's musical masterpiece is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's epochal play "Faust," which he created over 200 years ago in the classical city of Weimar – just a few kilometers from Erfurt! Thuringia, as both tradition and present demonstrate, is a place where art and culture thrive. (hw)
