Cornerstone for research at a high level: For approximately 200 million euros, a four-story, state-of-the-art new building with laboratory and technical areas for the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) is being constructed in Jena; from 2025, the building is expected to be usable by researchers. The FLI conducts research at its five locations in Germany on the health and well-being of food-producing animals and the protection of humans from zoonoses. The two specialized institutes at the Jena site represent the FLI's competence in researching bacterial pathogens and their resistance to antibiotics.
"Following the construction of the research infrastructure at the headquarters on the island of Riems for the FLI's primarily virology-focused specialist institutes, the new and extension building in Jena now also lays the forward-looking foundation for the important work on bacterial animal disease and zoonotic pathogens. This makes the FLI one of the world's most modern research institutions in this field," said Prof. Thomas C. Mettenleiter, President of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut. For the research work at FLI Jena, the new building must meet high requirements for equipment and safety. For example, special requirements are placed on the building envelope, all door and window openings, and the building technology.
