Zeiss and Hyundai are developing displays of the future

Innovative displays integrated into windshields are intended to make driving safer and more attractive – with this goal in mind, the Jena-based technology company Zeiss has now entered into a strategic partnership with the South Korean automotive supplier Hyundai Mobis. Both companies plan to develop holographic displays at their research center in Yongin that will show driving information such as navigation and speed.

Because the displays are integrated into the windshield rather than the dashboard, the driver can view the information without taking their eyes off the road. Zeiss's Jena-based Microoptics division spearheaded this new technology. The engineers developed a multifunctional smart glass technology. This technology utilizes micro-optics with extremely fine structures, enabling cameras to be integrated directly into the display glass. These structures are also suitable for projections, illumination, and filtering. "Together, we will set a new standard in the automotive industry and revolutionize the way information is displayed in vehicles," said Bernhard Ohnesorge, a member of the management board of Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH, on the occasion of the new partnership. The companies have jointly initiated the first steps in product development and plan to begin mass production within the next five years. (hw)
