Making migrants fit for the job market – the German Professional School

At the beginning of March, it launched at four locations in Thuringia – a school unlike any other in Germany. The German Professional School (GPS) is an institution that specifically prepares refugees and, in the future, young people from third countries for vocational training in the Free State, with a focus on social integration as well.

The official opening ceremony took place in Eisenach on March 4th – attended by Minister of Economic Affairs Wolfgang Tiefensee, State Secretary for Economic Affairs Dr. Katja Böhler, and GPS President Dr. Katrin Langer. GPS has four main locations: Eisenach, Gotha, Mühlhausen, and Jena. Local support networks carry out the work; the central service unit is located at LEG in Erfurt.

Thuringian companies need skilled workers to continue growing. At the same time, the integration of immigrants is a key concern of economic and social policy. Against this backdrop, GPS provides language skills up to level B2, as well as knowledge about Germany and values such as democracy, the rule of law, and equality. It also offers practical career guidance and, through cooperation with sports and cultural associations, promotes the social integration of its students. (hw)
