Thuringia is well on its way to achieving the nationwide goal of 80 percent renewable electricity by 2030. According to the State Statistical Office, renewable energies accounted for 63.9 percent of total electricity consumption in the first quarter of 2024. This equates to 1,956.2 gigawatt hours (GWh), an increase of 12.6 percent compared to the previous year. Wind energy made up the largest share at 66.5 percent, but energy from biomass and photovoltaics also recorded increases. In Germany as a whole, the share of renewables in the first half of 2024 was 58 percent, according to projections by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries.
