Partnership for green hydrogen showcases innovative Thuringian technology potential

Technology from the "Erfurter Kreuz" industrial park will make a significant contribution to the energy transition: The Thuringian Fraunhofer IKTS (Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems) and thyssenkrupp nucera from Dortmund, a global market leader in high-efficiency electrolysis systems, have entered into a partnership in the field of electrolysis for the production of green hydrogen. The partners will build a pilot plant for the production of high-temperature electrolysis stacks with SOE cells – a technology in which IKTS specializes.

SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell) technology allows for higher efficiency in electricity-to-hydrogen conversion and has the major advantage that CO2 can be actively extracted from the environment and converted together with green hydrogen into green synthesis gas and subsequent products such as e-fuels. The process also stands for long-term stability, robustness, and cost-effective mass production. Since this energy-efficient technology significantly reduces electricity consumption during electrolysis, industries that generate large amounts of waste heat could particularly benefit.

These activities are based at the Battery Innovation and Technology Center (BITC), which, in addition to developments in hydrogen production, also makes significant contributions to battery technology in the area of e-mobility. "The strategic partnership between the IKTS and thyssenkrupp nucera is further proof that Thuringia possesses outstanding expertise in the field of future technologies, particularly with regard to climate neutrality and the energy transition," says LEG Managing Director Andreas Krey. "The state supports the development of this potential; one example of this is the establishment of the BITC three years ago in the LEG industrial park 'Erfurter Kreuz'." (hw)
