LEG Economic Development Agency: Change at the top

For nearly three decades, Dr. Arnulf Wulff successfully led the department responsible for economic development in Thuringia at the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG). Over the years, the department's responsibilities expanded. In addition to providing services to attract companies investing in the Free State, its remit included promoting foreign trade and the internationalization of Thuringian companies, as well as managing clusters and overseeing the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS). At the turn of the year, the ever-active and highly skilled economic development officer is retiring and handing over the reins to Herbert Stütz. The new department head has also been with the company for a quarter of a century, serving for many years as deputy department head and team leader.

Since the 1990s, LEG has overseen approximately 1,800 new business development and expansion projects; there is likely hardly a project in which Dr. Arnulf Wulff – who also served as an authorized signatory since 2010 – was not involved. The department's successes include major investments such as those of CATL and N3 in Arnstadt and MDC Power in Kölleda. He participated in dozens of delegation trips to develop new markets for Thuringian companies and was also responsible for the work of the Thuringian Energy and GreenTech Agency (ThEGA) for several years. LEG's success story, which has resulted in the creation of around 86,000 jobs and triggered investments of approximately €13.8 billion, bears his unmistakable mark. With Herbert Stütz, who can look back on many years of experience as head of the Investment Promotion Team, an expert takes the helm who knows the business and has been skillfully operating within the network for decades. This change sets the course for continued success in LEG's economic development efforts in the future. (hw)

interview

Mr. Stütz, first of all, congratulations on your new position as department head at LEG Thüringen. What has your career path at LEG been like so far?

My time at LEG began in 2001 as a project manager, acquiring and managing Asian investors. In 2015, I took over the management of the Investment Promotion team. I am now very much looking forward to this new, responsible role.

What will be your main priorities in the coming months?

The department's focus naturally remains on supporting the Thuringian economy, whether in assisting with company relocations or expansions of existing companies, promoting foreign trade, driving innovation, and supporting the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS).

Can you elaborate on the specific plans?

In the new year, we will continue our efforts to raise the profile of Thuringia as a business and technology hub. We will also continue to support regional economic development agencies in the municipalities. In response to the challenging geopolitical situation, we are focusing on developing peripheral markets. And to better assess technological trends, we will launch a foresight process.

Mr. Stütz, thank you very much for the brief insight!
