ERFURT – It has taken place on train platforms, for example in Frankfurt am Main, as well as in commuter parking lots along the highways of this country, and even on the Baltic Sea coast – reaching out to skilled workers who no longer work in Thuringia is a task that the Thuringian Agency for Skilled Worker Recruitment (ThAFF) has been carrying out for many years in a variety of ways. On Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., it will happen again at the Volkshaus Sömmerda, where ThAFF will inform commuters and those returning to the region about job opportunities in the Sömmerda district. The venue is not as unconventional as some others in the past, and yet this is a special commuter and returnee day for ThAFF: it marks the 100th edition of this event.
“Targeted outreach to this group of skilled workers, whom we want to attract back to the Thuringian labor market, is even more urgent today than it was at the very first Commuter Day in 2008,” says Sabine Wosche, Managing Director of LEG, where ThAFF is located. “The demand for skilled workers in our local companies has risen steadily, and at the same time, we are seeing a growing desire among commuters and those returning home to relocate – people want to be closer to their families and lifelong friends, and to better balance family and career!”
The experts at ThAFF have conducted approximately 1,500 interviews during the past 99 action days. While ThAFF previously approached people in various locations throughout Germany, it has now found that action days focused primarily on the Thuringian regions are most effective – preferably on weekends and holidays when Thuringians who are currently not working in the state are back home and can learn about job opportunities. ThAFF now regularly holds commuter days in all Thuringian districts and independent cities on a rotating basis. In doing so, it relies on close cooperation with local stakeholders – partners from economic development agencies and regional management.
This weekend in Sömmerda, skilled workers will again be addressed in close cooperation with the district. Here, too, interested individuals will receive a concise overview of working and living in the region and important tips for deciding to return home. The program also includes recommendations for using job portals, links to application materials, and a review of application documents.

Background:
The Thuringian Agency for Skilled Worker Recruitment (ThAFF) is located within LEG Thüringen. Commissioned by the Thuringian Ministry of Labor, its primary goals are twofold: firstly, to help Thuringian companies meet their growing demand for skilled workers, and secondly, to support young people entering the workforce, as well as commuters and potential returnees, in (re)entering the workforce in Thuringia. To this end, ThAFF promotes Thuringia as an employment location, advises its target groups, and informs them about job opportunities in the Free State (for example, through commuter days). With its own company contact fairs – "academix" for young people and "comeback" for commuters and returnees – it connects companies with (future) skilled workers. ThAFF is also actively involved in various networks and supports labor market stakeholders at their events. ThAFF is funded by the Free State of Thuringia.
