Groundbreaking ceremony for new science campus in Jena

Jena will gain the largest biomedical university campus in Central Germany in the coming years: A new building and the renovation of an existing one will create spacious teaching and research facilities, particularly for pharmacy and nutritional sciences. Students at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena will especially benefit from the investment, which amounts to approximately 90.6 million euros.

Construction is expected to begin at the end of next year. The renovation phase recently commenced with initial structural investigations of the former women's clinic building, located in close proximity to the city and other university campuses. This building complex is being renovated and will house university departments such as pharmacy and parts of nutritional sciences. The 6,065 square meters will provide space for laboratories, seminar rooms, lecture halls, and areas for student work and academic communication. In addition, a new building with 2,511 square meters will be constructed for the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and its Institute for Data Science.

The Free State of Bavaria is providing a total of €54.3 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and €27.2 million from state funds to finance the project until 2029. Friedrich Schiller University and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), as future users, are contributing ten percent of the planned total expenditure. (hw)
