A climate action campaign is underway in Azmannsdorf: Families with children are planting trees for the climate

Action weekend organized by LEG Summer School e. V. and the Local Alliance of the City of Erfurt / Technical support provided by the German Forest Protection Association (SDW)

ERFURT – Doing good for the environment and climate, learning new things, and making a difference together – all this is offered by the large tree-planting campaign in Azmannsdorf, which started today, Friday, October 22, 2021, and runs until Sunday, October 24. The event is organized by the association "LEG Summer School – Companies Committed to Families e. V.", which is closely linked to LEG through its board and association work. The association's cooperation partner for the event is the local alliance "Strong for Families – Strong for Erfurt." Also on board as supporters are the German Forest Protection Association (SDW) and the municipality of Azmannsdorf. "Our family campaign, under the motto 'We plant for the climate. Your future forest. Our tree-planting campaign,' combines fun, learning experiences, and environmental commitment in the most enjoyable way," said LEG Managing Director Sabine Wosche at the opening. “Over the next three days, families will be planting trees on a green space in eastern Erfurt, contributing to greater sustainability and climate-friendliness, as well as a higher quality of life in the city.” “Planting 1,200 trees on half a football field is a small, multi-generational project. In a few decades, this area will become a forest. The forest will help protect the climate, provide habitats for plants and animals, and create recreational areas for people. It is wonderful and important that many citizens – especially children – can participate in shaping this sustainable future,” emphasized Erfurt’s Mayor Andreas Bausewein.

As part of the event, experts from the German Forest Protection Association (SDW) will guide all participants in planting trees and provide them with fascinating information about trees, forests, and the environment. A varied program of activities for the whole family, a free drink and a bratwurst for all children, and a tree-planting certificate for every young participant are also included. At the "Wishes for My Tree" station, all the young tree planters can write down a wish for their newly planted tree. The event was opened on Friday morning by Sabine Wosche and Andreas Bausewein, along with Peter Zaiß, Managing Director of SWE Stadtwerke Erfurt GmbH, Tobias Söllner, Managing Director of the German Forest Protection Association, Thuringia State Association, and Jens Bose, Mayor of the Azmannsdorf district.

It's long been known that trees, especially in urban areas, have a beneficial effect on the environment and quality of life. Planting them and thus sowing the seeds of a green life-giver is an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, young and old. The German Forest Protection Association (SDW) has been successfully carrying out similar projects throughout Germany for years. In Thuringia, the SDW has made it its mission to plant a tree for every 320,000 children living in the state. The "LEG Summer School Association" is contributing to this project with its action weekend at the end of October, to which the children themselves are expressly invited to plant the trees. Sponsors of the project include LEG, the Thuringian Development Bank (TAB), the Erfurt city administration, and the Erfurt municipal utilities group. The planting site in Azmannsdorf was selected by experts. All partners have jointly financed a total of 1,500 trees, which are now ready to be planted.
